Allium ‘Globemaster’ is the king of ornamental onions — prized for its enormous violet-purple globe heads, each up to 25 cm wide and packed with hundreds of star-shaped florets. Rising on strong, upright stems to around 90 cm, this giant allium delivers unforgettable structure and drama to the late spring garden.
Perfect for planting in bold groups through sunny borders, or as architectural focal points among perennials. Loved by bees and butterflies, the flowers also dry beautifully, adding year-round interest.
When to Plant: September – November
Plant in autumn, giving roots time to establish before the ground freezes. Like all alliums, cristophii needs excellent drainage — think sunny, free-draining beds or raised planters.
Classification: Hardy Bulb
Site: Full Sun
Soil: Light, well-drained, sandy or chalky
Moisture: Dry to moderate — avoid waterlogging
Expert Level: Easy – reliably perennial in the right spot
How to Plant Allium cristophii:
Plant bulbs 10–15cm deep and 15–20cm apart. They look best in bold groups and drift-style plantings. Water in well and forget about them — they're drought-tolerant once established. Foliage dies back before flowers appear, so plant alongside low-growing companions to cover the base.
Flowering Period: Late May – June
Location: Sunny beds, gravel gardens, cut flower patches
Maturity: Blooms first spring after planting
Height: Approx. 40–60 cm
Harvesting: Cut when fully open for maximum impact; dries beautifully too
Vase Life: 7–10 days fresh / several months dried
Cut & Come Again: Single late-spring flush – pairs well with early peonies or late tulips
