Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) are one of the most reliable and rewarding cut flowers you can grow — but only if you get the sowing and care right.

This Grow Along is here to take out the guesswork.

We have two grow-alongs. One for spring and another one for autumn sowing  - fundamentally the sowing is the same but each video contains extra information  for that season  - honestly is worth watching both!

Sow in Autumn for early blooms

SPRING GROW ALONG

This Grow-Along is for late winter to early spring sowing, when light levels are increasing but temperatures are still cool. It explains how snapdragons respond to day length and temperature, and why spring sowing behaves differently to autumn starts.

You’ll learn how snapdragon groups 1–4 actually work, which groups perform best when sown in spring, and how to manage germination and early growth without legginess or weak plants.

Ideal if you missed autumn sowing or want to plan succession crops, this Grow-Along focuses on growing strong, stocky plants early on — setting you up for long, florist-worthy stems as the season progresses.

Autumn Snapdragons Grow Along

STEP - BY - STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Some of the best snapdragons start life in autumn.

So you know exactly what to do, when to do it, and why it matters. With years of growing snapdragons for florists, I’ll show you how to go from tiny seeds to strong overwintered plants that deliver tall, florist-grade stems in spring.

This Grow-Along focuses on late summer to early autumn sowing, allowing young plants to overwinter and establish before spring growth begins.

It covers surface sowing, germination, moisture management, airflow, and practical strategies to reduce the risk of damping off during cooler, damper months — all tailored to real UK growing conditions.

By sowing in autumn and managing plants through winter, you’ll build resilient snapdragons that flower earlier and produce some of the strongest stems of the season.

Mastering Snapdragons from Seed to Vase

Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) are far more than cottage-garden charmers — in the right hands, they’re one of the most profitable and versatile cut flowers you can grow. In my podcast, I break down exactly how to take this crop from tiny seed to tall, florist-grade stems, ready for spring sales.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll learn:

  • Why snapdragon seed choice matters — and the varieties worth investing in

  • How the Group 1–4 system affects when (and how) you sow

  • The sowing and pinching techniques that give you stronger stems — plus how to multiply plants from pinched tips

  • Simple steps to stop stems from bending or curling in the vase

  • The biggest post-harvest mistake growers make with snapdragons — and how to avoid it

  • My own sowing routine, including last season’s slip-ups and what I changed for better results
