When to Plant: September – December
Plant as soon as the soil is workable in autumn. Daffodils like a cold period to establish strong roots before flowering, so the earlier the better. Late planting is still possible — just be sure it’s done at with some cold still forecast.
Classification: Hardy Bulb
Site: Full Sun or Part Shade
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile
Moisture: Moist during growing season, dry in dormancy
Expert Level: Easy – a brilliant beginner bulb
How to Plant Daffodils:
Choose a spot with well-drained soil — soggy ground is their worst enemy. Dig a hole around 2–3x the depth of the bulb (roughly 10–15cm), place the bulb pointy side up, and cover with soil. Space around 10–15cm apart in beds, borders, or even grass for a naturalised look. Water them in well, then leave them alone to do their thing.
Flowering Period: March to April
Location: Borders, under trees, pots, meadows
Maturity: Full flowering in the first spring after planting
Height: 25–50 cm
Harvesting: Pick when buds are just about to open and showing colour
Vase Life: 5–7 days (condition separately before mixing with other flowers as the sap is poisonous)
Cut & Come Again: One glorious spring flush — with more each year as they multiply underground
