Cleome ‘Rose Queen’, commonly known as Spider Flower, is a tall and elegant half-hardy annual producing airy clusters of rose-pink flowers with exceptionally long, delicate stamens. The blooms open in rich pink tones before gradually fading to softer blush, creating a beautiful multicoloured effect.

Flowering from midsummer until the first frosts, this striking architectural plant brings height and movement to sunny borders and cutting gardens.   Its exotic-looking flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while the long stems make an unusual addition to relaxed summer arrangements. The stems bear small spines which can feel uncomfortable when handled, so gloves are recommended when cutting. Grow in full sun and well-drained soil for the strongest plants and best flowering display.

When to Sow: January – April

HOW TO SOW:

Sow thinly into moist, free-draining seed compost and cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep at 18–22°C. Germination can be irregular but usually occurs within 1–3 weeks. Transplant seedlings carefully into individual pots once they are large enough to handle. Grow on in bright, frost-free conditions, then harden off gradually before planting outside after all danger of frost has passed. Pinch out the growing tips when plants reach approximately 15–20 cm tall to encourage bushier growth.

Seeds may require a period of cold, moist stratification. If germination has not occurred after approximately three weeks, place the seed tray inside a sealed bag and refrigerate at approximately 4°C for 2–4 weeks before returning it to warmth. Remove the cover once seedlings appear.
