Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) is one of Britain's finest native wildflowers, producing large domed clusters of dusty pink flowers that bloom from midsummer into early autumn. Rich in nectar, the flowers are a magnet for butterflies, bees, hoverflies and many other beneficial insects, making it an outstanding choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Despite its name, Hemp Agrimony is not related to cannabis. The deeply divided foliage simply resembles hemp leaves. Growing into impressive clumps, it thrives in moisture-retentive soils around ponds, streams and damp borders, while also performing well in sunny cottage gardens with adequate moisture. Its long flowering season and architectural habit make it an invaluable plant for both pollinators and cut flower gardens.
When to Sow: February – May (indoors)
September – October (direct sow outdoors)
HOW TO SOW HEMP AGRIMONY:
Before sowing, place the seeds in the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks to improve germination.
Sow Indoors - After chilling sow onto the surface of moist seed compost and do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain temperatures of 18–20°C and keep the compost evenly moist. Pot on seedlings once large enough to handle before planting outside after the last frosts.
Sow Direct - Sow onto a prepared seed bed in early autumn and lightly press seed into the soil surface. Natural winter conditions help improve germination and naturally stratify the seeds.
