Hyacinth Bean, Lablab purpureus, is a spectacular fast-growing climber producing richly coloured purple stems, attractive dark green foliage and elegant sprays of fragrant violet-purple, pea-like flowers. The blooms are followed by glossy purple-flushed pods, extending its ornamental interest well into autumn.

Perfect for covering arches, obelisks, fences and trellis, this vigorous annual climber creates height and dramatic colour in sunny borders and container displays. Provide strong support and a warm, sheltered position for the best results.

Please note: This variety is supplied for ornamental growing only and should not be consumed.

When to Sow: April

HOW TO SOW:

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for approximately 12 hours before sowing. Sow individually into small pots filled with moist, free-draining seed compost, approximately 2–3 cm deep. Keep at 18–21°C until germination.

Grow the seedlings in a warm, bright position and pot them on as required. Gradually harden off before planting outside from late May or June, once all danger of frost has passed. Plant in a warm, sheltered position and provide strong support for the vigorous climbing stems. Direct sowing is not recommended in most parts of the UK because the plants require a long, warm growing season.
