Lupinus hartwegii ‘Avalune’ is a wonderfully compact annual lupin bred to flower quickly, producing beautifully packed flower spikes just 12 weeks from sowing. Unlike traditional perennial lupins, the Avalune series flowers in its first growing season, making it a brilliant choice for gardeners who want fast results from seed.

Growing to around 40–50cm tall, Avalune lupins have a naturally bushy, compact habit and produce sweetly scented flowers throughout summer. Their shorter stems make them particularly useful for the front of borders and containers, while the flower spikes can also be harvested as cut flowers. The blooms are attractive to pollinators and bring the classic architectural look of a lupin to the garden on a much smaller plant.

When to Sow: Mar–May

HOW TO SOW LUPIN AVALUNE:

Sow indoors – Sow onto moist, free-draining seed compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Keep at 18–25°C and maintain moisture without waterlogging. Germination usually takes around 18–21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant individually into pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Harden off and plant outside once the risk of frost has passed.

Sow direct – Alternatively sow directly outside from spring into finely prepared, well-drained soil where the plants are to flower. Sow approximately 6mm deep and keep moist during establishment.
