Lemon Catnip (Nepeta cataria subsp. citriodora) is a wonderfully aromatic hardy perennial that combines ornamental beauty with culinary and herbal uses. Its fresh green foliage releases a refreshing lemon fragrance when brushed or picked, while airy sprays of small white flowers bloom throughout summer, attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Unlike traditional catnip, Lemon Catnip has a fresh citrus fragrance and typically produces a milder response in cats. This makes it an excellent choice for gardeners who want to enjoy growing catnip without plants being constantly flattened or stripped by feline visitors.

Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, it returns year after year and thrives in sunny borders, wildlife gardens and containers. The fragrant leaves are perfect for herbal teas, while the nectar-rich flowers provide a valuable food source for pollinators throughout summer.

When to Sow: February – June

HOW TO SOW LEMON CATNIP:

Sow Indoors - Sow onto the surface of moist, free-draining compost and lightly press the seed into the surface. Do not bury deeply, as light helps improve germination. Maintain a temperature of 18–20°C and keep compost moist until seedlings emerge.

Sow Direct - Sow outdoors after the risk of hard frost has passed into a prepared seed bed. Lightly press seed onto the soil surface or cover with a very fine layer of compost. Thin seedlings once established.
