Astilbe arendsii ‘Rhapsody’ produces elegant, feathery flower plumes in a refined mixture of cream, blush pink, rose and rich carmine. Reaching approximately 80 cm tall, this hardy perennial is perfect for bringing height, colour and soft texture to shaded borders, woodland gardens and large containers. Its long, slender plumes also make beautiful cut flowers for romantic summer arrangements. Astilbe thrives in rich, moisture-retentive soil and is an excellent choice for those cooler, lightly shaded areas where many flowering plants struggle.
When to Sow: Feb–Apr & Jun - Jul
HOW TO SOW:
Sow the pelleted seeds onto the surface of moist, free-draining seed compost. Press them gently into place but do not cover, as light assists germination. Keep at 21–24°C with high humidity and ensure the compost remains consistently moist. Germination generally begins within 2–4 weeks.
Once seedlings are established, gradually reduce the humidity and grow them on at approximately 18–20°C. Transplant individually when large enough to handle and continue growing in bright but lightly shaded conditions.
Harden off gradually before planting outside in rich, moist but well-drained soil. Plants require a Time of winter cold to initiate flowering and will generally bloom the summer following sowing.
