An elegant mix of Camassia, featuring delicate, star-shaped flowers in shades of soft powder blue, lavender-blue, rich violet and creamy white.
Producing tall, graceful spires of flowers in late spring and early summer, Camassia is a hardy perennial that returns year after year. Perfect for naturalistic planting, cottage gardens and borders, particularly in moisture-retentive soils. The flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinators.
When to Sow: Sep–Nov
HOW TO SOW: Sow seeds thinly in trays or deep pots of moist, free-draining seed compost. Cover lightly with compost or fine grit and place in a sheltered outdoor position or cold frame over winter. Seeds require a period of cold, moist stratification to break dormancy. Germination usually begins as temperatures rise in spring.
Alternatively, cold-stratify seeds in slightly moist vermiculite in the refrigerator for 8–12 weeks before sowing. Keep seedlings in pots while the small bulbs develop, avoiding unnecessary root disturbance.
Classification: Hardy bulbous perennial.
Expert Level: Some experience required.
Germination Time: Up to 90 days following cold stratification; germination can be irregular.
Flowering Time: May–Jun.
Site: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil Type: Fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage.
Soil Acidity: Slightly acidic to neutral.
Moisture: Prefers consistently moist soil during active growth. Tolerates seasonally damp conditions but avoid permanent waterlogging.
Care: Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Leave bulbs undisturbed to establish and gradually multiply into larger clumps.
Use: Ideal for naturalistic planting, woodland gardens, damp borders and areas with partial shade. Particularly useful for moisture-retentive soils and areas that remain wet during spring.
Height: 40–60cm.
Plant Spacing: 10cm.
