Unusual flowers with rich, dramatic colouring. Cynoglossum officinale is a wonderful addition to the garden. Commonly known as Hound's Tongue, this distinctive plant produces clusters of small, deep burgundy-red flowers, held above sturdy, branching stems and softly textured, grey-green foliage. The flowers have an almost antique quality, with their dark wine-red colouring making a beautiful contrast against the silvery, hairy leaves. Reaching approximately 60–75 cm, it brings height, texture and an informal, naturalistic feel to cottage gardens and mixed borders.
Flowering from late spring into summer, Cynoglossum officinale is particularly attractive to pollinating insects and looks lovely planted amongst other informal garden flowers. A hardy biennial or short-lived perennial, it is easy to establish from seed and may self-seed where conditions suit. Its distinctive flowers make it an interesting choice for gardeners looking to grow something a little different from the usual summer annuals.
When to Sow: Sep - Apr
HOW TO SOW: For best results, sow seeds directly into prepared, well-drained soil in spring. Alternatively, sow into small 7cm pots of moist, free-draining seed compost in late winter or early spring, covering lightly. Maintain a temperature of 15–20°C and keep the compost moist without waterlogging. Once seedlings are established, gradually harden off and plant into their final positions, taking care not to disturb the roots unnecessarily.
