Meconopsis baileyi ‘Blue Towers’ is an extraordinary form of the Himalayan Blue Poppy, producing clusters of delicate, sky-blue flowers with crinkled, papery petals and contrasting golden-yellow stamens. Unlike the traditional Himalayan Blue Poppy, which produces flowers more widely spaced along its stems, ‘Blue Towers’ develops an impressive concentration of blooms towards the tops of its upright stems, creating a spectacular display.

Growing to approximately 50–80cm, this beautiful perennial thrives in cool, sheltered gardens with partial shade and consistently moist, humus-rich soil. Flowering in late spring and early summer, it is particularly suited to woodland gardens and shaded borders, where its remarkable blue flowers create a striking focal point. An exceptional choice for gardeners looking to grow something truly unusual.

When to Sow: Feb–Apr & Sep–Oct

HOW TO SOW:

Sow seeds thinly onto the surface of moist, fine seed compost, pressing gently into the surface without burying them, as light aids germination. Place trays in a cool, bright position out of direct sunlight, ideally at 10–15°C. Keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Avoid artificial heat, which can encourage fungal problems and poor germination. Seedlings generally emerge within 3–6 weeks, although germination can be irregular and take longer. Once large enough to handle, carefully transplant into individual pots, keeping seedlings cool, moist and protected from strong sunlight. Grow on before planting out into a sheltered, partially shaded position with fertile, moisture-retentive soil.
