Mentha pulegium, commonly known as Pennyroyal, is a low-growing, aromatic perennial producing clusters of soft lilac-purple flowers arranged in rounded whorls along its stems. The small green leaves release a strong, distinctive mint fragrance when brushed or crushed.

A spreading, hardy perennial, Pennyroyal is particularly useful for damp borders, pond margins, wildlife gardens and naturalistic planting. It thrives in moisture-retentive soils, tolerates partial shade and gradually forms a fragrant carpet of foliage. Its summer flowers add delicate colour and texture to the garden.

Please note: Pennyroyal is toxic if ingested and should not be used for culinary purposes, herbal teas or home remedies.

When to Sow: Mar–May

HOW TO SOW:

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist, free-draining seed compost and gently press into the surface without covering, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of approximately 18–21°C and keep the compost consistently moist.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on in a bright, sheltered position. Gradually harden off before planting outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.
