If you're looking for a poppy that's a little different, Hungarian Blue is one of the most striking varieties you can grow. Its large, silky flowers open in rich shades of smoky violet-purple, creating an elegant display from late spring into early summer before giving way to beautiful decorative seed pods.
Despite its delicate appearance, this is an easy-to-grow annual that thrives in a sunny position and is happiest when direct sown where it is to flower. Once established, the plants require very little attention and are excellent for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.
The blooms are loved by pollinating insects, while the distinctive blue-green foliage and sculptural seed heads continue to provide interest long after the petals have fallen. The seed pods are also highly prized for fresh and dried flower arrangements.
Hungarian Blue combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, cornflowers, nigella, larkspur and other hardy annuals, creating soft, romantic planting with movement and texture.
Why you'll love it:
- Large silky flowers in an unusual smoky violet-purple.
- Decorative seed pods for fresh and dried arrangements.
- Excellent for cottage gardens and cut flower gardens.
- Easy to grow from seed and perfect for direct sowing.
- A valuable nectar source for pollinating insects.
It's one of those flowers that quietly steals the show—simple, elegant and effortlessly beautiful from first bloom right through to its architectural seed heads.
