Wild garlic is a hardy perennial native to the UK, prized for its fresh green leaves, delicate white star-shaped flowers, and distinctive garlic fragrance. Also known as Allium ursinum, it thrives in shaded or partially shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, damp borders, and naturalistic planting schemes.

Flowering in early spring, wild garlic produces clusters of elegant white blooms held above lush foliage, creating a soft, natural look that works beautifully in informal garden designs. The leaves, flowers, and buds are all edible, making it a popular choice for kitchen gardens and foragers alike.

This low-maintenance perennial establishes gradually and will naturalise over time, forming generous drifts in the right conditions. It prefers moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil and performs best when left undisturbed.

Perfect for gardeners looking to create a relaxed, woodland-style planting scheme or add an edible, seasonal element to shaded areas.

When to Sow: Sep - Nov & Jan- Feb

HOW TO SOW WILD GARLIC:
SEEDS NEED COLD STRATIFICATION. Place in fridge for 4 weeks prior to sowing.
Surface sow  in pots or trays of moist compost , covering them lightly with a thin layer of compost or grit. Place the containers outdoors in a shaded, sheltered position where they can experience natural winter conditions.

Keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged throughout the winter months. Germination can be slow and irregular, often taking several weeks to a few months. Do not discard trays too early, as some seeds may take longer to emerge.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into individual pots or directly into their final position, taking care not to disturb the roots too much.
