How to Use AI to Define Your Brand Voice (Even If You’re Just Starting Out)

So, you’ve set up your flower business — and now you’re supposed to magically become a content creator, copywriter, and marketing strategist too? Brilliant!!!

If you’re staring at a blinking cursor thinking “what the hell do I even sound like?”, this one’s for you.

Over the past year, I’ve been using ChatGPT as my behind-the-scenes marketing assistant — not to replace my voice, but to help me refine it. And if you’re a florist or flower farmer feeling like AI is too generic (or just a bit cringe), I’m here to show you a better way to use it — starting with one foundational prompt.

Let’s break it down.

Is AI even worth it for a creative business?

Short answer: yes, but only if you train it properly. AI is like a junior assistant with no clue who you are, what you care about, or how you talk — unless you tell it. That means if you’ve ever opened ChatGPT and asked it to “write a caption for Instagram” and then recoiled in horror… you’re not alone.

The good news? With the right ChatGPT Prompts, you can turn it from a generic word-vomiting robot into something much more useful — like a brand strategist who gets your vibe.

The first prompt every flower business should try

This prompt flips ChatGPT into strategist mode. It’s perfect if you don’t have a defined tone of voice yet — or if you’ve been copying other florists’ content just to get something out the door (no shame, we’ve all done it).

Here’s what to say:

Prompt:"Act as a world-class brand strategist who specializes in small creative businesses. Help me define a distinctive and authentic brand voice for my flower farm. I'm just starting out and I want to stand out in a crowded space. Please ask me 10 insightful questions that go beyond the basics. I grow seasonal British flowers and admire brands like [insert brands you love]. Once I've answered, write me a short brand voice guide I can use for all my marketing"

You can speak this aloud using the ChatGPT voice feature if you want it to pick up your natural tone. That’s what I do when I’m in the car or walking around the plot — it’s like talking to a business coach who actually listens.

What happens next?

ChatGPT will fire back with smart questions — things like:

  • What makes your flowers different?

  • Who are you growing for?

  • How do you want customers to feel when they buy from you?

  • What words describe your personality?

Answer in your own voice. Don’t overthink it. Once you’ve replied, ask it:

"Now write a short paragraph describing my brand voice and how it can be used"

Boom. You’ve got a baseline voice guide — written by AI, but sounding like you.

Make your ChatGPT Prompts even better with brand influences

Now here’s the magic trick most people skip: layer in the voices of people or brands you admire.

I’m a big fan of Mary Portas — I love her directness, clarity, and ethical fire. You can literally tell ChatGPT:

"I love the way Mary Portas doesn't mince words. She's direct, honest, and strategic. Please incorporate her values into my brand voice"

Or go full copywriting legend:

"Layer in David Ogilvy’s principles to keep my copy persuasive but grounded. Think clear headlines, useful language, and no fluff"

Not sure who your influences are? Ask ChatGPT:

"Who are the top 3 brand strategists or marketing experts I should learn from, and why?"

Let it spit out some options, research them, and pull in the bits that resonate. The more context you give ChatGPT, the better the results.

Want to level up your AI assistant?

Here’s where it gets fun. Once you’ve got your base voice saved, you can start to:

  • Brainstorm hooks, captions, and email subject lines

  • Refine website copy so it actually sounds like you

  • Get consistent across all your content — no more second-guessing

You can even roleplay with ChatGPT.. You can ask it:

"What would Mary Portas and David Ogilvy say about launching at a local flower market?"

Here’s what it gave me (and I screamed its soooo good ):

Mary Portas:"This isn’t about flogging bunches for a fiver. It’s about emotion, nostalgia, and theatre. Your stall should stop people in their tracks."
David Ogilvy:"What’s your hook? What’s your headline? Don’t say 'fresh flowers' — say 'Grown 3 miles from here. Picked yesterday. Zero plastic.' That’s your copy."

This, my friend, is how AI gets useful.

No more blank screens

AI won’t do the work for you. It won’t magically make your business successful. But it will stop you from staring at a blank document wondering what to say. And when you’re wearing all the hats — growing, weeding, wrapping, marketing — that kind of support is gold.
